OK, new mama, we know you’re exhausted and can barely find time to finish your cup of coffee, so the idea of working out is probably the furthest thing on your mind. But starting a postpartum exercise routine can do wonders, not only for your physical health but also for your mental health, too. Between feedings and diaper changes, it’s hard to carve out some time for yourself. And let’s get real, you may not even want to.

That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best gear that makes exercising with your baby or, at the very least, with them close by, a breeze. Once you get the “all clear” from your doctor, around 6-8 weeks after you give birth, you can start thinking about simple exercises that you can do at home, but you also want to make sure you have all the right stuff. From resistance bands to weighted gloves to — surprise! — baby gear you already own, these exercise essentials will give you all the motivation you need to get moving. The best part? You’ll also bond with baby in the process!

What to Consider Before You Begin a Postpartum Workout

Consult your doctor

This is super important! Even if you were active prior to being pregnant, you need to get the go-ahead from your doctor before beginning a postpartum exercise routine. The doctor can check for things you can’t see or maybe even feel, like the separation of the abdominal muscles which is called diastasis recti, or a weak pelvic floor. If gone unchecked, you can do some serious damage by working out. Remember mama: Safety first — yours, that is.

Baby safety

Of course, you will also want to take the safety of your baby into consideration. If your baby cannot hold their head up on their own, hold off on any exercises in which you use them as a weight. If you want to jump right in when baby is still young, place them on a play mat or in a bassinet close by.

Plan a schedule

While you may feel frantic in those first few months after welcoming a baby, a schedule can really help make the day go that much smoother. Plan time to work out with your baby in between feedings or after nap time, so you have the best chance of getting your workout done.

The Best Gear for Working Out with Your Baby

If you are going to start working out (or start again), you’ll want to make sure you have the right fitness gear. Your body has been through many changes, and you may find yourself not only needing to switch up your workout routine but also your gear as well. Plus, if you’re planning to exercise with your baby, having the right stuff will make for a great time for all.
