Splurge vs. Save Nursery Ideas
Shop Story

We’ve rounded up some of the most stylish, high-end nursery room ideas around! From cribs to gliders and strollers here are their affordable—but still chic—lookalikes.

Splurge: Oeuf Classic Crib (Left)

Price:$920.00

We’re major fans of the Oeuf brand and the married designers behind it, Sophie Demenge and Michael Ryan. This sleek crib comes in birch ($890) and walnut, offers three positions for the mattress, and converts to a toddler bed (with the additional purchase of the conversion kit, $240). Perhaps most importantly, it’s simply beautiful and well-made. If you love the look of the Oeuf crib but can’t swing the price, this Baby Mod crib is a close (and much cheaper) alternative. It offers four-level mattress positioning and converts into a daybed or toddler bed using the guard rail conversion kit that’s included.

Splurge: Maria Black Bean Diaper Bag by Mia Bossi (Left)

Price:$390.00

Celeb moms like Tina Fey and Jennifer Hudson have been spotted with Mia Bossi bags—and we get why: these diaper bags look nothing like traditional ones, allowing moms to use them well beyond their babe’s diaper years. But at a much more doable price, we also love the bold look of this JJ Cole diaper bag from Target. For less than a quarter of the price, you’ll save some serious dough without scrimping on style.

5 of 48 Image Credits: Serena and Lily

Splurge: Serena and Lily Ashbury Glider (Left)

Price:$1,195.00

Nursery and baby bedding designers Serena Dugan and Lily Kanter include celeb mamas like Jennifer Garner, Mira Sorvino, and Bethenny Frankel among their many fans. We love the rich palate of colors available for this Ashbury compact swivel glider—and the option of purchasing slipcovers separately, making it easy to update the look in years to come. Shipping is an additional $120, and because it’s a custom order, it’ll take 8-10 weeks for delivery. For a third of the price (and fast, free site-to-store shipping to your local Walmart—or home delivery for a fee), though, we’d be happy to opt for this Enchanted swivel gilder in a rich chocolate brown. Matching ottomans are available for both chairs.

Splurge: Stokke Tripp Trapp (Left)

Price:$249.00

Not only is the Tripp Trapp chair known for its clean modern design, it’s also widely appreciated for its functionality: the chair grows with a child, as the seat and footrest are both adjustable, and its appropriate for use between 6 months and even adulthood! Additionally, the chair can be pulled right up to the family dinner table, allowing Junior to eat his pureed peas with the rest of the fam. But, while we love the Tripp Trapp, we don’t love its price tag. Rest assured, this high chair from Keekaroo offers similar functionality and quality. It works for babies 6 months and older, and supports up to 250 pounds in weight. Some parents may even prefer the Keekaroo because you can buy a dishwasher-safe tray for it, while the Tripp Trapp doesn’t allow for one.

9 of 48 Image Credits: Dwell Studio

Splurge: DwellStudio Dots Chocolate Crib Set (Left)

Price:$330.00

Both of these lookalike crib sets are made by DwellStudio, but the cheapo one was designed especially for Target’s Dwell line. Now parents who love Dwell’s bold, mod look don’t have to break the bank to get it.

11 of 48 Image Credits: Bugaboo

Splurge: Bugaboo Cameleon (Left)

Price:$979.00

For years, Bugaboo has been the go-to brand for a statement-making stroller. This high-quality multi-terrain stroller is fully customizable, offering parents a rainbow of options for the stroller base ($880) and tailored fabric set ($99). The modular system adapts to infant car seats (with an additional adapter) as well as reversible positioning for the bassinet and stroller seat, the latter of which can be tilted into three positions, and comes with an adjustable handlebar. Appropriate for up to 40 pounds. If you love the vivid red of this Bugaboo Cameleon but can’t fathom spending close to a grand on a stroller, you may just fall in love with the Indigo Stroller from First Years. Available in red as well as black/green and navy/gray combos, it also offers reversible seating, compatibility with infant car seats, 5-position recline, and an adjustable handle height. It’s rated for use up to a whopping 50 pounds to boot.

Splurge: Boppy Garden Patch Play Gym (Left)

There are a lot of bells and whistles on this Boppy play gym in a soothing aqua and green combo. It includes an oversized pad, seven garden-themed toys, and a mini Boppy pillow. If you like the look of the Boppy gym but can’t relinquish that much floor space, this sweet and simple baby gym from Ikea is a good match—at about half the size (just under 18 inches in diameter) and less than half the price.

15 of 48 Image Credits: Argington

This 3-drawer Argington dresser brings a modern look to any nursery. Available in ebony or birch with white drawer fronts, it features a white changing tray top that is easily removed for conversion to a big kid (or adult) dresser. Unfortunately, shipping adds on another $225, pushing the final price tag past the $1,000-mark. Also convertible to a dresser for future use, this 3-drawer amber and white changer from Baby Mod comes with a removable changer top (but no changing pad). And you’ll save some serious dough with this option, especially if you opt for Walmart’s free site-to-store shipping.

Splurge: Ninna Nanna Bassinet (Left)

Price:$395.00

Bassinets don’t have to look like flouncy wedding dresses from the ‘80’s, and this sleek number from Monte Design Group proves it. It comes with a removable basket (covered by a machine-washable suede microfiber) that sits in a solid birch rocker base, as well as a waterproof mattress and two fitted cotton sheets. Available in this stone basket/dark brown base combo, as well as a charcoal basket and glossy white base. While we love the striking look of the Ninna Nanna Bassinet, it may be hard to justify spending $400 on an item that will receive just a couple months of use. A super-affordable alternative is this Jolly Jumper Rocking Moses Basket Stand that offers similar visual appeal and fits most Moses baskets and stroller carry cots.

19 of 48 Image Credits: Giggle

Splurge: Giggle Baby Moses Basket (Left)

If you’re looking for a Moses basket to pair with the stand on the previous page, look no further. This luxurious and plush basket from Giggle offers a cuddly spot for sleeping. The woven palm basket is lined with 100% organic cotton fleece and flannel with hypoallergenic fill, and the handles make it easy to carry from room to room or to use as a travel bed in baby’s first three months (or up to 15 pounds). And although we agree that baby’s sleep (and therefore, mom’s) is priceless, this Badger Basket is about one-tenth the price of its splurgier cousin. It’s lined in removable, machine washable gingham fabric and comes with a soft mattress pad.

23 of 48 Image Credits: Land of Nod

The Andersen Crib from The Land of Nod makes for a neutral, unfussy anchor for a nursery. Made of solid American maple, it features three adjustable mattress heights and easily converts to a toddler bed with an optional conversion kit. Available in white and maple finishes. Like many of Ikea’s products, one of the features we appreciate most in this Gulliver crib is the clean simplicity of its design (its bang for the buck isn’t bad either). The mattress can be adjusted at two different heights, and one side can be removed for when your babe is (gulp!) big enough to climb in and out of bed. A conversion kit is included. A natural wood finish is available for $139.

Because we know that a flattering pair of jeans are priceless (especially when preggo), we’re willing to shell out some dough for maternity jeans like these from J Brand that makes us feel comfy and surprisingly slim (even if we’re not). But sometimes, a dark wash and slim cut is just as flattering at $35 as it is at nearly $200, which is why these maternity skinny jeans from Old Navy are such a smart steal.

Tray available for an additional $5. Also available in blue.

This Danish-designed airtight VIPP diaper pail is the top of the line when it comes to fashion and function. Its stainless steel is easy to keep clean and doesn’t absorb smells. Sadly, no sum of money can prevent diapers, and thus diaper pails, from stinking. But if you want to avoid odor-absorbing plastic, this self-closing steel step-can will do just fine.

But if you’re dreaming of a heirloom-y baby carriage but can’t quite spring for the model once used by Queen Elizabeth to squire her baby Prince Charles in 1948, this pram from Inglesina was inspired by 19th century British aristocracy, refined in Italy, and “handcrafted by skilled artisans using only the finest materials.” It’s hardly a steal but it is less than half the price of the Silver Cross.
