We heard from parents all over the country (and on our message boards) who have resorted to some pretty unusual techniques to get their babies to sleep. We bet you haven’t tried these!

“Use lavender soap and lotion head to toe.” –Halloween08

“We used to put our daughter in the swing, and turn the radio to static. We called it Sophie’s easy-listening station.” –Chris Risley, Columbus, OH

“As odd as it sounds, when my daughter was an infant the sound of the vacuum cleaner running would put her to sleep in a matter of minutes… She is 6 now and when she’s sick and trying to relax she still asks me to vacuum!” –autymsmommy

“When my daughter was born, the fish tank used to relax her to sleep. I know it’s pretty crazy, but it worked!” –JuneCleaver

“When nothing else works, we put our daughter in her swing and Daddy plays the guitar for her.” –Lara Blair, Martinsville, VA

“Try using a recorder of Mother’s heartbeat.” –Halloween08

“When our son wakes up at an ungodly hour, we click on the ceiling fan in his room, which almost always soothes him. We call it our snooze button.” –Kendra Yamamoto, Vancouver, WA

“I will never forget the nights my husband and I took turns driving around in the middle of the night because the sound of our truck lulled our son to sleep.”–Nicole Riggs, Nibley, UT

White noise. For a while Emilee wouldn’t sleep until either the TV or the stereo was put on static. For some reason it got her to sleep and kept her asleep as long as it was on. Didn’t do a darn thing for my husband and me, but it helped her sleep so that was all that mattered. Thankfully, we only had to do it for about two weeks.” –twiceblessed

“I was so tired one night and my girls wouldn’t go to sleep so I decided to put them in their carseats and ride around the block. I strapped them in the car seats and went in the bedroom to throw some clothes on. I Came back out and they were sound asleep! So for about a month, I would lay pillows around their carseats on the living room floor, give them blankets, abd sleep beside them. That was some of the best nights where they slept wonderfully!” — Littleape

“I turn on my daughter’s musical mobile and dance with her in front of a color-changing nightlight she has in her room until the music shuts off. Then I lay her back down and turn on the mobile for one more cycle.” –Manige Blackburn, Arvada, CO

“When I had problems getting my daughter to fall asleep, I would quietly sing the ABC’s. No other song worked, but the ABC’s worked EVERY SINGLE TIME. I’m sure it was the cadence and the soft grumble in my chest. It worked day or night, nap or bedtime.” –ra11en
