Step-by-step bat face painting instructions from Extreme Face Painting

Kids will go, well, batty for this simple design that's perfect for a night of tricks and treats.

Step 1:
Load the end of the sponge with light blue and lay in the bat's head and body across the bridge of the nose. Then, create the outline of wings above the brows and down the temples using the same color.

Step 2:
Fill in the wings around the eyes using a sponge and dark blue. Drag the paint down into points on the cheeks using the corner edge of the sponge.

Step 3:
Outline the bat's wings, body and head with thick black lines using a no. 3 round.

Step 4:
Use the same brush to add details to the face, ears and wings.

Step 5:
Highlight the outside edges of the ears, head, body and wings using a no. 3 round and white. Fill in the eyes using the same brush and color.

What paint you should use:
Water based, hypoallergenic and nontoxic paints. (Or any brand of face paint.)

What brushes you should use:
Small synthetic rounds with stiff bristles and sharp points. (Like a no. 3 round) Remember that the bigger the brush size, the less control you'll have.

Other materials you may need:

Cotton swabs, erasers, disposable brushes, sponges, loose polyester glitter and hand sanitizer or baby wipes to remove the paint.

A note on stippling:
This is one of the most useful sponge techniques. Stippling is great for blending color, suggesting texture, indicating highlights and suggesting facial hair. To get the most realistic result, hold your half sponge upside down so the rounded part touches the skin. Using the edge of the sponge would result in lines—something you want to avoid when stippling.
